How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria

Hurricane Maria completely devastated Puerto Rico and left a trail of devastation, fatalities, and no resources to this country. Although Maria has lost strength and is only a tropical storm, now we must try to help those in the middle of the ruins of Puerto Rico.

The question is: How do you solve a problem like Maria? (Of course, this is a song from The Sound of Music used in a completely different context but...) You solve a problem like Maria by doing our best as a country to help those in need get the resources that are necessary in order to survive. When Hurricane Irma left Florida and Georgia with serious damage, resources such as clean water, linemen, food, temporary shelter were given to these people because Americans take care of each other. When Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas, Americans and the President were ready to help others recover from the devastation. However, as Puerto Rico has suffered Hurricane Maria, Trump has only held a press conference saying our thoughts and prayers are with the country. There are 1.5 million people without food and clean water, and the President will not lift the shipping restrictions for Puerto Rico even in this time of emergency.

I'm sorry but how is this right, exactly? We take care of our own. Our own have been taken care of. Why not help those who aren't in a place to help themselves right now? The President was more interested in tweeting about #TakeAKnee than actually humbling himself and helping others.

International affairs is not my cup of tea, but I understand how important it is to help those in need. If a natural disaster hit North Korea, I would understand why the president wouldn't lift a finger to help them. However, Puerto Rico doesn't deserve the cold shoulder in this instance.
